THE VINTAGE HOFNER WEBSITE REGISTERS 2006 - 2019

NOW CLOSED TO FURTHER REGISTRATIONS

The following registers were compiled between 2006 and 2019. The intention was to ask Hofner owners to fill in a registration form which provided me with detailed information about their guitar, in order that I could use that information in order to fully understand the development progression of certain important Hofner models. The models chosen for this treatment were mainly the Selmer-distributed models, which were comparatively easy to date because of Selmer's insistence on regimental serial number systems for Hofner-supplied guitars. The only non-Selmer models also registered were the 500/1 bass guitar, the 125,126,127, & 128 Club-style guitars, and the  160,161,162,163, & 164 budget-level solid guitar range. I felt at the time that, for various reasons, I had confidence that I would be able to accurately date those non-Selmer models despite them not generally having serial numbers.

The above exercise has resulted in two separate documents for each model:

  • The actual Model  Register on which the guitar is listed against the owner at the time of register, together with one or two basic features of the guitar.

  • An MS Excel Spreadsheet which again lists out every guitar registered in date order, but also provides in tabular format the detail features of each guitar. This therefore provides a simple visual indication as to the date when such features as pickups, headstock designs, etc. were changed in the manufacturing process. It is also possible to gain a fairly accurate idea as to which was the most popular finish, how many were fitted with vibrato tailpieces, numbers of left-handed guitars etc.

As well as using this information during the building-up of the website, it also proved to be invaluable when compiling a book - "The Complete Hofner Violin Bass Story" (Centerstream Publishing 2013). I hope that by making the collated information available on the website, it has been of use to other students of The Hofner Company's products, and that it will continue to be so for many years.

Unfortunately, it has now become time to close down this registration process. Supervising it all has not been seamless by any means, with "registrations" being made frequently by "internet bots", and the misuse of registration forms by visitors wishing to make contact in order to make non-related queries. Even without such problems, the need to maintain a reasonable service during holidays had meant sitting at a laptop for many hours using an intermittent internet link in various parts of the world. The main reason however for curtailing the service is my worsening eye-sight, together with the need for me to spend a lot less time in front of a computer screen.

So, please accept my apologies if you have left the registering of your Hofner too late. If any of the owners already registered wish to contact me for any reason, i.e. if they have sold their guitar and do not wish to remain on the register, they have changed their location, or if any information is required for instance in the case of a stolen guitar, then please use the link below to get in touch.

Finally and most importantly, many thanks to the thousands of Hofner owners who have taken the trouble to register their guitars on my website. The information that you have provided has helped to make the website a more accurate and hopefully more useful reference tool.
