The lovely flamed appearance is provided by the use of maple veneers front and back, sandwiching a solid core of possibly flat-sawn maple or alder.
Note the "Jazzmaster" style Solo/Rhythm Circuitry.
The pickup fitted to the 179 was unique to the Hofner range. Perhaps it was chosen to reflect the appearance of the ones fitted by Fender to the Jazzmaster?
