Serial No. 263
This guitar is very interesting for two reasons - first it has a Selmer serial number stamped on the rear of the headstock, and to the best of my knowledge the 500/2 Club Bass never appeared in the Selmer Catalogue. Secondly, it is obvious from the photos below that a Club GUITAR body was used to make the bass. The narrower bass neck has been accommodated in the guitar body by inserting strips of wood on each side of the neck slot in the body. My guess is that this 500/2 was one of the very first made, and was a prototype produced quickly by using a 500/1 neck which had a Selmer Serial # relating to the 500/1 numbering sequence already stamped into it , and a Club guitar body.
The number 263 on a Selmer distributed 500/1 Violin Bass would probably equate to an approximate date of late 1963. Full production of 500/2 Basses is believed to have commenced in 1965. The volume pots on this guitar are dated the 9 week of 1964.
