NICK'S DESCRIPTION OF HIS BASS:

"It’s finished in a chocolate brown translucent lacquer that I take to be cellulose. This gives the appearance that it is using mahogany for the body, but when you take out the control panel the timber is actually light in colour and doesn’t look like mahogany to me. That said, I don’t know what it is. The guitar is quite lightweight.

Very simple controls, with 2 pickup switches and single tone and volume. No indication where these came from and Hofner don’t seem to have used the same on any other guitar. The pups are, presumably, a pair of humbuckers but I can’t tell. It’s full scale length of course; a bit of a departure for Hofner solid basses. Tuners are replacements, the original type long since out of production and unobtainable by all accounts. The neck is covered in the lacquer so is again hard to determine what the timber might be. I have a feeling this may be mahogany. Rosewood finger board. 20 frets with MOP single dot inlay markers, double at the 12th.

It’s not a very exciting instrument to look at and could even be described as ugly! The colour doesn’t help much either. I can’t imagine they sold many, and since few ever turn up these days I think this is probably true. It provides a good bass tone however and would suit a pro player who wanted a good solid bass that delivered a resounding thump!"
